Job 19:5–12 (NIV): 5 If indeed you would exalt yourselves above me and use my humiliation against me, 6 then know that God has wronged me and drawn his net around me. 7 “Though I cry, ‘Violence!’ I get no response; though I call for help, there is no justice. 8 He has blocked my way so I cannot pass; he has shrouded my paths in darkness. 9 He has stripped me of my honor and removed the crown from my head. 10 He tears me down on every side till I am gone; he uproots my hope like a tree. 11 His anger burns against me; he counts me among his enemies. His troops advance in force; they build a siege ramp against me and encamp around my tent.
After the horrors of Auschwitz, Elie Wiesel lost his faith. “Where were you, God of kindness?” he asked, recalling the evil he and others suffered. “In my childhood I did not expect much from human beings. But I expected everything from you.” And yet, Wiesel realized later that his faith had never really left him. “It is because I believed in God that I was angry at God,” he told a journalist, “and still am.” You don’t get angry at someone you don’t believe exists. (Sheridan Voysey, Our Daily Bread 29th April 2026)
I’m not sure that anyone should be angry with God for anything. For example, for generic things like evil and injustice. Why get angry at God? Evil exists because we human beings have the will to do things on our own. As a result, we also ended up having injustice. But there is also good in humanity as can be seen from us helping each other in times of difficulty and disaster, and justice from the legal system.
As a believer, there are even more reasons why we should not be angry with God. We don’t deserve salvation but it is by His grace that we are saved. We are unworthy and yet Jesus died for our sins and redeemed us from eternal damnation. Instead, He gave us eternal life and the hope that we will one day live with God for all eternity in the new heaven and new earth. Will anger at God change anything? He is sovereign and whatever we go through, He has a plan for us and our lives. Always remember Romans 8:28 – “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose”.
Whatever losses we have suffered, whatever injustice or evil we have been afflicted with, illnesses or health issues we face – commit all these and our future into His hands. His plans for us – “are plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future,” (Jeremiah 29:11). Unforseen and unfortunate things may happen in our lives but always remember that the LORD always wants only the best for us. It is through adversity and suffering that we get to know God better and experience His grace, love and compassion. So why get angry at God? He is the creator of heaven and earth and our Heavenly Father who loves and treasures us deeply.
