What is the reason we accepted Christ? What attracted us to become a Christian, a believer, follower and disciple of Christ in the first place?
There could be a variety of reasons why we accepted Christ and one of them would definitely be the promise and hope of eternal life. The Holy Spirit had lifted the scales of our eyes to see the truth and we having exercised our God-given will to choose, had decided to follow Jesus, the same way Peter, John and James dropped everything and followed Him. In a way, God had predestined us to be His children, sanctified by the blood of Christ and yet as humans, we always have the choice to say yes or no.
Another reason or an additional reason we accepted Christ is probably because we sought His grace, refuge and protection. As much as we know our destination is eternal, we still have to Iive here on earth even if we are pilgrims passing through this temporal life. We have responsibilities and obligations as a human being to provide for ourselves, our family and loved ones. In fact, as a believer now we are also obliged to help the poor, the needy and the downtrodden, the fatherless, the widow and the foreigner.
In that sense, God declares today that He is our protector. As much as we place and put our trust and faith in Him, He will be our refuge and fortress. He will cover us with His feathers and under His wings we will find refuge. His faithfulness will be our shield and rampart. The promise in Psalm 91 is that whoever rests in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. We will not fear the terror of the night nor the arrow that flies in the day nor the pestilence nor the plague. A thousand may fall at our side and ten thousand at our right hand and yet it will not cone near us. The LORD is indeed our refuge, our fortress, our protector! Amen!
